SORTA QUEASY NOOSE...

This latest installation of my “Bought Poetry” list comes with a couple of twists. The first is that, technically, my purchases include my own newer books, THE AWAKENING and the relational elations of ORPHANED ALGEBRA (the latter penned with j/j hastain). I bought these two copies from a local fundraising sale that included books. Imagine my surprise – then kinda-queasiness – at seeing my books obviously deaccessioned by someone in order to be at this “rummage sale.” ‘Twas actually a good deal for me as the price they charged was lower than my author’s cost for copies, and the copies were in “new” (vs used) condition. I’m assuming these were unused review copies—and, hey, at least their sales back to the author were for a good cause. But still: kinda queasy -- I'm a big girl (and I know most review copies are never reviewed), but coming across them so physically this way has never happened to me before …

The second twist is that part of the list below is from the inventory of one of my publishers in the Philippines who’s retiring. Fortunately, someone was traveling from there to the U.S. so that I didn’t have to pay the international postal rate that would have made the books extremely expensive. Always HAPPY to have Giraffe books in the Poetry Library!

So here’s my latest “Bought Poetry” list which, while usually of poetry collections, also includes books in other genres (in today's list, a novel, essay collection and political science) if the authors are also poets.
THE AWAKENING by Eileen R. Tabios

THE RELATIONAL ELATIONS OF ORPHANED ALGEBRA by Eileen R. Tabios and j/j hastain

MY FAVORITE WARLORD by Eugene Gloria

A CUP OF SUN: A BOOK OF POEMS by Joan Walsh Anglund

SONGS OF INNOCENCE (color facsimile of the First Edition with 31 Color Plates) by William Blake

Giraffe Books:
POEMS AT WAR by Jose Ma. Espino

A BLADE OF FERNS by Edith Tiempo

MARGINAL ANNOTATIONS by Edith Tiempo

MOI BUYS POETRY ... FOR FODDER

Thanks to an earlier Ron Silliman announcement (I think on Facebook; Ron is one of only 12 of my friends as I only joined FB to monitor my son ... then I decided to friend Ron coz I was bored of teen knuckleheadedness on my Timeline), I picked up the Grand Piano Series for $75 -- a good enough deal to move the topic from the horizon to the under-my-nose spot for attention. I'd bought and read the first volume when it just came out but then failed to keep up as Life interfered. Anyway, it arrived all bundled up from Lyn Hejinian, one of the poets in the series. And now it's sitting, complete with its packaging material, on one of my kitchen counters like so:

I keep looking at the still life. I kinda have this hankering to create a mini-book from the packaging. I've done so before (and did it again on another mini-book that I've yet to blog about). As I write this, I'm wondering how to do a book cover that won't be ... brown. The other two mini-books' covers also rely on brown pieces of paper. Can't people send mail in scarlet or lavender?

Anyway, let Moi huddle with the Muse. They should be able to do something ... especially if they'd actually read the rest of the books (hah: what an idea!) ...

***

...and this all reminds me to do another update on my Recently Bought Poetry List, to wit:

THE RESERVOIR by Donna Stonecipher

BOUGH BREAKS by Tamiko Beyer

FLUX, CLOTH & FROTH, Vol. 1 (text) by John Bloomberg-Rissman

FLUX, CLOTH & FROTH, Vol. 2 (notes to poems) by John Bloomberg-Rissman

POETRY PURCHASED IN 2012

For 2012, I bought 83 books of poetry by, on and/or edited by poets, as well as books in other genres (e.g. biographies) authored by poets.  This is a 77% increase over the prior year's purchases of 47 titles, but not impressive given 2011's low threshold.  Again, I can do better.

I bought from bookstores, publishers, Amazon.com and other online site, St. Helena's wonderful used bookstore Main Street Books and library sales.  What this year reveals is that Kindle didn't take off for me; I stopped using it after a few months of novelty and so only "purchased" four books for Kindle.

Nota Bene: Money doesn't reflect desire when it comes to my poetry-buying. While this list offers poets whose works I like and thus acquire, it also reflects books bought from no particularly strong desire to include in my poetry library (jest curiosity). For instance, some books were bought at a local public library sale for cents on the dollar, a price that makes me buy poetry without a particularly strong interest in such acquisition. Also, I am fortunate to have alternative access to poetry books I actually will cherish, whether through gifts, trades or even review copies for Galatea Resurrects. Nonetheless, a list exists of my BOUGHT POETRY OR BOOKS BY POETS and so here it is for 2012. Unless stated otherwise, the books are poetry collections:

BELATED BLOG-FILE: 2010 PURCHASES OF POETRY

For some reason, I’d omitted sometime in early 2011 to blog-file my 2010 purchases of poetry collections or books in other genres by poets. So, here it is below—a total of 93, which is certainly an improvement from my Great Recession buying which only totaled 36 titles in the prior year of 2009. I’m blog-filing it in anticipation of a future post on my poetry purchases for 2012. If I track each year, then I can generate a year to year pattern for reasons still obscure to Moi.

As always, my poetry purchasing list doesn't accurately reflect my poetry interests or tastes.  It just reflects ... what I bought and what I buy often occurs through random circumstances unplanned by Moi.

POETRY = GIFT

I understand why folks rarely gift me poetry -- coals to Newcastle and all that.  But, this year, I wanted poetry books under the tree and so prompted the hubby on what to get for said purpose.  Entonces, I received two items: the marvelous LOST AND FOUND: THE CUNY POETICS DOCUMENT INITIATIVE SERIES III and Dodie Bellamy's THE BUDDHIST which I've desired for a while:

With the above, it seems a timely time to post what's likely to be my last 2012 update to my Bought Poetry List (poetry books or books in other genres by poets):

DIANE DI PRIMA: THE OLSON MEMORIAL LECTURE, Edited by Ammiel Alcalay & Ana Bozicevic

THE BUDDHIST by Dodie Bellamy

LARYNX GALAXY: PROSE POEMS by John Olson

NEW & SELECTED POEMS (1995) by Ron Padgett

CITY OF CORNERS by John Godfrey (I already own it! Another case of buying books I couldn’t remember I already owned. So, this “spare” copy is placed on moi Community Book Shelf in case you want to trade!)

POEMS FOR BIG, BURLY MEN!

I'm stuck at home as have to be around while this young guy fixes the air conditioner. He thought it cool I am a poet, and joked maybe I could write a poem for his girlfriend. Instead, I said that I’ll “fix him up” with an entire poetry book! (I have some-hah) signed to his girlfriend after he finishes the repair. That’s what poetry books are good for, you know—to ensure the repairmen (aka: “Big, Burly Men”) do a good job...

When I’m not out there shoving my books at Big, Burly Men, I’m buying other poets’ books! You should, too! In fact, I just ordered from Horse Less Press’ Two-Chaps-For-$14 Special (that’[s a good deal!). I ordered Rebecca Loudon’s and Norma Cole’s chaps! Speaking of which, here’s my latest update to my BOUGHT POETRY LIST (publications bought since I last posted my list):

MORE ADVENTURES IN MONOCHROME by John Yau

CRAZY BRAVE: A MEMOIR by Joy Harjo

MUTATING THE SIGNATURE: QUARRTSILUNI, edited by Dana Guthrie Martin and Dave Bonta

THE COUNTRY ROAD by James Laughlin

POEMS 1955-1959 AND AN ESSAY IN AUTOBIOGRAPHY by Boris Pasternak

OUR LADY OF THE RUINS: POEMS by Traci Brimhall

FABRIC by Richard Froude

THE SOFT PLACE by Kate Schapira

CLOUDFANG :: CAKEDIRT by Daniela Olszewska

HERE IS A MINI-PARADE by Kate Schapira and Daniela Olszewska

SCENTED RUSHES by Nada Gordon

REGARDING WAVE by Gary Snyder

SILENCES: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF LOSS by Eileen R. Tabios
Yes, dears, I also occasionally buy my own books (which is good news as this means that I had to let go of my own inventory for some good cause like gifts or, in this case, because someone wants to review it!). But while I don’t mind giving away poetry books (especially to Big, Burly Men), it’s always special when someone buys them—you poets know what I’m talkin’ about!

P.S. I'm about to order Rene Ricard's LOVE POEMS because I was moved by Jack Kimball's post on him--love that idea by John Wieners: the time to write about love is as aftermath...

CROWDS FOR POETRY?

I am trying to join the 21st century.  Hence, I am watching closely some attempts at crowd-funding for poetry projects, partly because of the first item in the following update below to my Bought Poetry List.  It still seems to me that for crowd-funding to succeed there has to be crowds.  That's been a problem--this lack of crowds--for poetry, notwithstanding Horseless Press' recent success.  But I am delighted by their succcess and for now will focus on saying Congratulations!

Now, let's buy Poetry!  Here's what I've done recently:

CLOUDFANG : : CAKEDIRT by Daniela Olszewska, THE SOFT PLACE by Kate Schapira and other HORSELESS PRESS publications viz Kickstarter http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2049449313/o-yes-daniela-olszewska-and-kate-schapira-horse-le

PITTANCES FOR POETRY

I’ve long thought poetry hardbacks to be a silly exercise in cultural capital (even though they have value for library collections and other porpoises). Silly because, I bought two recently by Margaret Atwood and Robert Hass. Most poets’ books, of course, go immediately to paperback. I assume Atwood got the hardback because she’s also a successful novelist. Hass got his … actually, Hass got his deservedly, full stop.

But lookit—these hardbacks inevitably (and swiftly) go on the remainder bins. I spent $7.00 for the Hass Book which initially retailed for $34.99. I spent $5.00 for the Atwood which initially retailed for $25.00. Who are we all fooling with these hardback issuances anyway?

Speaking of more pittances for poetry, the rest of the purchased poetry books or books by poets in my new RECENTLY BOUGHT POETRY List below came from our local library sale. I purchased the John N. McDowell (a great read, by the way) for a buck. Then I purchased the rest on the sale’s last day which is one of those *Fill A Paper Bag With As Many Books As You Can Cram* for $3! This means the other 19 titles were purchased at about five cents per book! (No wonder I trade poetry!)

Well, Dear Poetry, I know you don’t really care (and I’m just amusing moiself with following your cash equivalents) because your valuation is so, ahem, difficult … precisely because you’re priceless! Anyhoo, so Moi recently bought:
THE APPLE TREES AT OLEMA: NEW AND SELECTED POEMS by Robert Hass

THE DOOR by Margaret Atwood

CLAY FEET / WIRE WINGS, poems by John N. McDowell

MARINA TSVETAEVA: THE DOUBLE BEAT OF HEAVEN AND HELL, biography by Lily Feiler

SYLVIA PLATH: A BIOGRAPHY by Linda K. Wagner-Martin

THE RING AND THE BOOK by Robert Browning with engravings by Carl Schultheiss

PRIMER FOR NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS by Philip Metres

NATURAL HISTORIES by Leslie Ullman

THE TULIP SACRAMENT by Annah Sobelman

SAINTS OF HYSTERIA: A HALF-CENTURY OF COLLABORATIVE AMERICAN POETRY, co-edited by Denise Duhamel, Maureen Seaton and David Trinidad

SELECTED POEMS OF RUMI, Translated by Reynolds A. Nicholson

THE SEPARATE NOTEBOOKS by Czeslaw Milosz, Translated by Robert Hass and Robert Pinsky

EROS: THE BITTERSWEET by Anne Carson

JOURNAL OF A SOLITUDE by May Sarton

CAMPOCORTO by Peter Meinke with drawings by Jeanne Meinke

SELECTED POEMS IN FIVE SETS BY Laura Riding Jackson

SAPPHIC SONGS: SEVENTEEN TO SEVENTY by Elsa Gidlow

THE MOON IS ALWAYS FEMALE by Madge PIercy

JEW BOY by Alan Kaufman

WOMEN OF THE BEAT GENERATION by Brenda Knight

DEADLINE POET by Calvin Trillin

HERE AND NOWHERE ELSE by Jane Brox

What a bounty for a nickel each, yah? (That Philip Metres is a revelation! So happy to have it!) But this also reflects how these mostly-donated books don't make it into the library collection. So librarians aren't putting these books (some of which were hardback) into the library (what's wrong with this picture?). I always pick up all the poetry titles because I don't want to see them languishing and I know I may just be the only customer for poetry; at least Galatea will give them a home...

Oh, but by the way, it’s kind of cool to go to a library sale and see one of your poems in play! That is, I and Nick Carbo collaborated on a fabulous poem that ended up in SAINTS OF HYSTERIA: A HALF-CENTURY OF COLLABORATIVE AMERICAN POETRY, co-edited by Denise Duhamel, Maureen Seaton and David Trinidad. Check out this anthology from Soft Skull Press—it’s really well-done, with notes on the collaborative process. So the poems are not just wonderful but the collaborative process notes are very useful and educational!

MOI CANCER-FREE MOM COACH-ES GABRIELA!

So, Coach has provided me with go-to bags over the years. I think it’s because my acquisition of my first Coach bag symbolized my then new adult independence. Plus, my first Coach bag was a black leather bag that kept getting tattered and all I had to do was send it to a Coach factory in New Jersey and they were always happy to repair it for free—I still have it today. Anyway, got a new Coach bag today and here is Gabriela trying it on:

Said bag was part of a retail celebration Mom and I embarked on this afternoon to celebrate this morning’s news: she’s now FREE OF CANCER! Wooooot! Promptly therewith, Mom decided to attempt to heal the economy with several purchases including my newest daily Coach!

But Mom didn’t just buy bags…or shoes….a watch for Michael…and various other sundries—she also purchased some poetry books for me … Which is to say, this of course was just a way to provide another update to my Recently Bought Poetry List, to wit:
FRAGILE REPLACEMENTS by William Allegrezza

HAVE by Marc Gaba

OLD WAYS TO FOLD NEW PAPER by Leza Lowitz

THE REAL SUBJECT: QUERIES AND CONJECTURES OF JACOB DELAFON WITH SAMPLE POEMS by Keith Waldrop

COLLECTED SONNETS OF EDNA ST. VINCENT MILLAY

TRANSFER by Naomi Shihab Nye

PERSPECTIVES ON A GRAFTED TREE: THOUGHTS FOR THOSE TOUCHED BY ADOPTION, poetry anthology edited by Patricia Irwin Johnston

For my blog file, I’ll also add my poetry purchases for Kindle (though these are free from Kindle):
LEAVES OF GRASS by Walt Whitman

POEMS OF WILLIAM BLAKE

THE ODYSSEY by Homer

ILIAD by Homer

SUPPORT YOUR LIBRARIES!

Our local library has a holiday fundraiser where one can purchase an ornament to hang on their tree and with that purchase is the ability to write a message on a "leaf". Here's what Moi did on the fly:

Yeah: "Reading is healthy!"

Library fundraisers, of course, are worth supporting. My updated BOUGHT POETRY list below includes some that I recently purchased through the library fundraiser -- it's an indication of poetry's state of affairs that those books essentially were purchased for cents on the dollar (sigh: while I like the dollar-savings, I don't like the implications of "value" ascribed to the poetry books). Anyhoo, here they are:
SELECTED POEMS by Harvey Shapiro

RADIUS OF LIGHT by Joshua Auerbach

A POINT IS THAT WHICH HAS NO PART by Liz Waldner

THE BEAUTIFUL LESSON OF THE I by Frances Brent

THE GREAT ENIGMA: NEW COLLECTED POEMS by Tomas Transtrumer, Trans. by Robin Fulton

HOMECOMING: NEW AND COLLECTED POEMS by Julia Alvarez

From Library Sale
TIME AND MATERIALS: POEMS 1997-2005 by Robert Hass

FULL HORIZON by Bruce McEver

THE SACRED GEOMETRY OF PEDESTRIANS by Ken Weisner

THE SWORDFISH TOOTH by Cynthia Zarin

FIRST INDIAN ON THE MOON by Sherman Alexie

OBSERVE THE LARK by Katie Louchheim

TRAVELING IN REFLECTED LIGHT by Andrena Zawinski

ATLANTIS by Louis Dudek

A FURTHER RANGE by Robert Frost

THE BEST AMERICAN POETRY 2007, Guest Editor Heather McHugh

It wouldn't surprise me if I'm the only library patron that buys poetry books. Basically, when I see poetry in these fundraisers, I buy them all if they're poetry. At least they'll get a HOME better than the deaccessioned shelf.

RESURRECTING THOSE POETRY BOOKS!

I don't know why public libraries deaccession poetry books. It's not like said libraries are for-profit institutions so why treat poetry the same way as out-of-date computer books or unpopular light fiction? Librarians--ye inherently cultural activists!--just make those books available! Anyway, here's another poetry book I plucked from a library's "freebie" section -- they didn't even bother to put it on shelves where they stock books for modest fundraising sales (I guess they, too, know it's difficult to sell poetry ... which is not a reason to deaccession them!)

Yep, Billy Collins didn't fare well at this library. But that's okay, I've placed it on my Community Book Shelf where it can have a second life by being yours for trade! So much for Mr. Poetry Bestseller...!

***

Great Recession poetry economics is even worse than the usual moronic oxymoron of poetry economics. For example, for the last fiscal year, I (as a poetry publisher) apparently generated net sales through SPD of $193.37. After covering my annual SPD distributor fee of $160, I net, yep, $33.37. Well, at least I ain’t in the red…

Nor do I want poetry publishers to be in the red! So I did my modest bit with this latest update to my BOUGHT POETRY List:
THE CURVED PLANKS: POEMS, A BILINGUAL EDITION by Yves Bonnefoy, Trans. by Hoyt Rogers

THE ERRANCY by Jorie Graham

THE BOOK OF MIRRORS by Frieda Hughes

STONEPICKER AND THE BOOK OF MIRRORS: POEMS by Frieda Hughes

PRACTICAL WATER by Brenda Hillman

Nevuh mind Black Friday. Give a poetry book or a book by a poet for the Holidays! For instance... As for Moi, I'm personally eye-ing THIS ONE as a Xmas present to moiself...! Because I know My Man! will not disappoint....! Do consider that a recommendation, too!

'EDNA IS GOOD"

Yes, usually the word “bankers” elicits an Ugh nowadays. But yesterday my local banker made MOI DAY! I was talking about a banking problem (what else) with her and her computer was slow (of course). During said slow period, she chit-chatted with me as she’s personable … and Moi is personable, too. ‘Twas during that chit-chat that I mentioned my "business" Meritage Press and the Great Recession in poetry publishing and she replied by saying she’s bought a poetry book!

Yep. She’s bought a poetry book! Just to be sure my elation was not over-the-top, I asked whether she’s a poet when not doing her day job. Nope, she’s not a poet. AND SHE BOUGHT A POETRY BOOK!!!!!!

So, WOOOOOT!

I asked, which poet? She replied, “Edna … something.”

I enthusiastically riposted, “Ah. Edna St. Vincent Millay.”

“Yes,” she replied. “I read a poem and it spoke to me so I bought the book.”

Wisely, I offered my expert opinion: “Edna is good.”

Then we beamed brightly at each other.

Then her computer caught up with reality, and we returned to my banking problem.

But isn’t that great? I was so happy to meet a non-poet who voluntarily buys poetry books. Okay, maybe I should say “poetry book” as in singular. For all I know, that may be the only poetry book she’s ever bought. But, if so, she’s still ahead of general culture, yah?! So definitely worth a Nota Bene.

And speaking of which, here’s my latest list of recently-purchased poetry books or books by poets:

bough breaks by Tamiko Beyer

ROAD SONG FOR by Lars Palm

THE DESECRATION OF DOVES by Arlene Ang

ADOPTION PAPERS by Jackie Kay

KALI'S BLADE by Michelle Bautista

PARTS AND OTHER PIECES by Tom Beckett

SILK EGG: COLLECTED NOVELS (2009-2009) by Eileen R. Tabios (As this blog is about Moi, I non-apologetically suggest you buy it, too! GO HERE for the ordering links through various venues.)

Sure, the list could be more voluminous. But how are you doing with your poetry purchases?

WE BUY BOOKS!

I'm finding it so moving to watch Michael "play" with his Kindle. I said before that his first purchase was Jon Krakauer's INTO THE WILD, a book that's a summer reading requirement by his future high school. He's uploaded some free educational games since, but he's also purchased now (for a mere $1.79!) THE COMPLETE MARK TWAIN COLLECTION (over 300 works). And I believe his next book purchase will be John Steinbeck's GRAPES OF WRATH (another recommended summer reading by his high school). That's moi boy! Studies show that the two biggest factors to contribute to a student's high school experience are (1) parental involvement, and (2) reading! Check and check!

As for Mama Moi, here's my latest BOUGHT POETRY List!

ELEVATORS by Rena Rosenwasser

PERIL AS ARCHITECTURAL ENRICHMENT by Hazel White

AREAS OF FOG by Joseph Massey

FRAGILE REPLACEMENTS by William Allegrezza

SMALL SKY by Janice Sapigao

THE MONEY MACHINE & POETRY...OR NOT

Just read Inside the Money Machine by Minnie Bruce Pratt (Carolina Wren Press, Durham, NC, 2011). It's like a poetry version of what Barbara Ehrenreich explored in her NICKEL AND DIMED and BAIT & SWITCHED books on the working class. One of the depressing reminders I take away from Pratt's book is how the typical price of a poetry book -- $15? $16? -- is really a hardship for many people.

That reminder, though, is another reason why I continue to be so impressed by a poet I know who dedicates 10% of hir total income a year to purchasing poetry books. I--who plan to read every poem every written--don't even do that.

But I try, and here's my latest BOUGHT POETRY list:

FIELD WORK -- NOTES, SONGS, POEMS 1997-2010 by David Hadbawnik

SO LATE, SO SOON: NEW AND SELECTED POEMS by Carol Moldaw

CULTURE OF ONE by Alice Notley

FABULAE by Joy Katz

RECOMMENDED: MEMOIR AND ESSAY BY MICHAEL GOTTLIEB

One poetry-related book I recently bought that was absolutely worth every single penny (yes, I was happy to pay full retail) is MEMOIR AND ESSAY by Michael Gottlieb. Enthralling. A page-turner. Kudos to Mr. Gottlieb and his publisher Faux Press / Other.

While it wasn't the main point of this coming-of-age tale, there was a point touched on in MEMOIR AND ESSAY that resonated with me as it's a topic that's always made me raise a wondering eyebrow -- it's how writers borrow AND THEN REFUSE TO RETURN books from other writers. In MEMOIR AND ESSAY, this incident made for amusing reading as Mr. Gottlieb suspected he was mentally inflating the value of one book just because the borrower insisted on keeping it.

This issue is also on moi mind because, recently, a writer asked for a copy of a book I released last century: REPRODUCTIONS OF THE EMPTY FLAGPOLE. When I said that I couldn't believe that writer (a good friend) didn't have a copy of such an old book, said writer explained that someone had borrowed her copy and just refused to return it! A compliment, Moi hopes, to the work....but there we go again with writers refusing to return books borrowed from other writers!

Nor is this the same as stealing books from a public library or a bookstore. They know that the book they're refusing to return is from another writer's personal library. I mean, for most writers, their personal library is one of their most treasured possessions--one would think borrowers would realize that!

Anyway, here's the rest of my updated list of recently bought poetry books or books by poets:

THE COMPLETE POETICAL WORKS OF JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER

A WORLDLY COUNTRY: NEW POEMS by John Ashbery

SEVEN NOTEBOOKS by Campbell McGrath

GILGAMESH by Stephen Mitchell

MEMOIR AND ESSAY by Michael Gottlieb

ON THE LIMITS OF MONEY

I offer below a list of poetry books or books of other genre by poets that I purchased in 2010. What's good about it is how it reflects an improvement from 2009's relatively paltry list.

Money doesn't reflect desire when it comes to my poetry-buying. Distribution does matter -- this list also reflects purchases gifted by Mom when we go shopping at a local Copperfield bookstore, which means my purchases are constrained by the universe of Copperfield's poetry buyer who has shown him/herself not to be particularly broadminded. Finally, I also buy poetry books for other people, e.g. through the Galatea Resurrects Publisher's Prize (which is not to say I wouldn't buy books on the list of this link for my own enjoyment).

So the list offers no particular picture of Moi, since I have too many alternative access to poetry books I actually will cherish, whether through gifts, trades or even review copies. Nonetheless, a list exists of my BOUGHT POETRY OR BOOKS BY POETS and so here it is for 2010. Unless stated otherwise, the books are poetry collections:
